JACKIE VAN BEEK
After writing and directing a collection of short films, Jackie premiered her first feature film ‘The Inland Road’ in competition at the 2017 Berlin Film Festival. Her second feature ‘The Breaker Upperers’ (created with Madeleine Sami) premiered to rave reviews at SXSW and sold to Netflix US.
Jackie and Madeleine were named TimeOut NZ Entertainers of the Year, 2018.
She co-created the hit NZ TV series ‘Educators’ with comedians Jonny Brugh and Jesse Griffin. It was dubbed by the NZ Herald as “morbidly hysterical…and funny as f**k”. It recently sold to Australia and won a Bronze World Medal at the 2020 New York Festivals.
Jackie’s directed on Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi’s television spin offs, ‘Wellington Paranormal’ (NZ) and ‘What We Do in the Shadows’ (US).
She moved into the commercial space last year directing a comedy campaign for SKY TV.
Jackie and Madeleine are currently working with Aggregate Films on the Netflix Rom-Com, ‘Hope’.
MADELEINE SAMI is one of New Zealand’s most well known and accomplished creative multi hyphenates. She started her career as a teenager in the theatre touring numerous shows and garnering praise across the globe for her virtuosic performances. Since then Madeleine has shifted into film and television starring in some of New Zealand’s most successful film and television productions including, ‘Sione’s Wedding’, Taika Waititi’s ‘Eagle vs Shark’, ‘Boy’ and ‘What We Do in The Shadows’, the Michael Fassbender western, ‘Slow West’, black comedy ‘Come to Daddy’ starring Elijah Wood and Jane Campion’s television series, ‘Top of the Lake’.
Madeleine created, wrote and starred in two seasons of her own critically acclaimed TV show ‘Super City’. She was awarded an AFTA Best Actress award and a SWANZ award for Best Comedy script. The show was also made into a pilot by ABC in the US in 2012.
Madeleine moved into directing in the mid 2000s starting out in music videos. She has directed two seasons of female driven sketch comedy show ‘Funny Girls’. Most recently she co wrote/directed/starred (with collaborator Jackie Van Beek) in ‘The Breaker Upperer’s’ which had it’s premiere at SXSW 2018 and went on to be released worldwide. Upcoming projects include co directing the film ‘Hope’ starring Aubrey Plaza for Netflix, and a film spinoff of her TV show Super City in development with the NZ film commission.
